About the Dragon Heart Legacy Series
The Dragon Heart series takes us on a magical journey to a distant realm. Born with the blood of magic, Breen Kelly has no idea of the power she has inside her heart. When she travels to Ireland, she encounters a portal which will bring her to her true destiny. The realm of the fey is brimming with danger, threat, love, magic, and complicated magical politics that Breen gets stuck right in the middle of – not to mention the royalty. As Breen gets more confident in herself and her position in the foreign realm, she’ll begin to uncover the seedy underbelly of which only she can put a stop to.
Nora Roberts Dragon Heart Series #3 – The Choice
Talamh is a land of green hills, high mountains, deep forests, and seas, where magicks thrive. But portals allow for passage in and out–and ultimately, each must choose their place, and choose between good and evil, war and peace, life and death…
Breen Siobhan Kelly grew up in the world of Man and was once unaware of her true nature. Now she is in Talamh, trying to heal after a terrible battle and heartbreaking losses. Her grandfather, the dark god Odran, has been defeated in his attempt to rule over Talamh, and over Breen–for now.
With the enemy cast out and the portal sealed, this is a time to rest and to prepare. Breen spreads her wings and realizes a power she’s never experienced before. It’s also a time for celebrations–of her first Christmas in both Talamh and Ireland, of solstice and weddings and births–and daring to find joy again in the wake of sorrow. She rededicates herself to writing her stories, and when his duties as taoiseach permit, she is together with Keegan, who has trained her as a warrior and whom she has grown to love.
It’s Keegan who’s at her side when the enemy’s witches, traitorous and power-mad, appear to her in her sleep, practicing black magick, sacrificing the innocent, and plotting a brutal destruction for Breen. And soon, united with him and with all of Talamh, she will seek out those in desperate need of rescue, and confront the darkness with every weapon she has: her sword, her magicks–and her courage.
We’re sad to announce that this is the final book in The Dragon Heart Legacy series. We’re very happy to announce, however, that it is exciting and overall a wonderful end to an equally enjoyable series.
Breen has been developing her strength and confidence over the course of the novels, and in this final book we really see Breen shine. We pick up in the aftermath of a brutal batal. In the face of grief, we rebuild strength and morale. Breen strides forward with the need for world peace.
One of my favorite parts about novels has always been the community within the pages. Building a family from rag-tag nobodies and creating something wonderful and tightly woven with care and love. We see this here in the community which happily embraces Breen and Marcus. Through the series we’ve built immense love and loyalty within the community, and in The Choice, Nora Roberts does a wonderful job in exploring the many unique relationships within the story. Not just focus on the romance, but an intense tale of friendship, family, and all sorts of unique relationship colors. This really makes the story all the more impactful because we truly hear what Breen is fighting for.
Don’t let my sappy reminiscense on love and community mislead you, this novel is packed with action and suspense. We’re preparing for Odran’s attack, and the suspense is only intensified by the shifting perspectives between our heroes and Odran’s preparations. The dual perspective really juxtaposes the safe, loving community we see deep in the bones of Talamh.
“How she could have two worlds mean home should’ve been a mystery. But she found it a gift.”The Choice, Nora Roberts
The concluding battle, which the series has been bubbling up to, comes surprisingly late in the book. Some fans point this to their dislike, but personally, I found that it fits perfectly with the messages of the series. It was never a series about war, but rather about love. Love of family, heritage, culture, people, and the love that is woven deep in society which allows us to function as a community. This all is a commentary which works in dichotomy with the themes of power-hungry people, prejudice, and distrust.
If you’ve read our reviews for the previous novels: The Awakening & The Becoming, you may note that we haven’t included a Summary section.
This isn’t without purpose. Although the storyline of Nora Roberts’ The Choice is spectacular and holds up excellently amongst the predecessors of the series, we felt that the true representation of this story isn’t within the plot, but the themes behind it. The themes of community, love, and relationships are so heart-touching (and heartbreaking), that summarising the plot line-by-line would fail to do this masterpiece justice.
Our Rating: ★★★★★ (if we could give it six stars, we would!)
Nora Roberts The Choice Discussion Thread
Not many authors hold such a sense of community with their fans, but it’s no surprise that Nora Roberts is different!
On her Facebook, Roberts linked to a discussion forum for her latest release! Just note: spoilers will be deleted! Here she answered some burning questions, and gave us the news we were hoping not to hear:
I’m sorry to disappoint, but the trilogy is over. I’m not going to write a follow up—as all has been resolved—or a short story. There’s no actual plot or storyline. I do understand some readers want it to go on, but it has to end. And it did!Nora Roberts
Such a shame!
