Frances ‘Baby’ Housman falls in love with dance instructor Johnny Castle when they are thrown together at a holiday resort. Throw an over-protective father, a jealous spurned woman and many other incidents into the mix and the path of love isn’t a smooth one. The Notebook (2004)

With it being widely reported that Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams didn’t get on at all whilst filming The Notebook then you would never guess from their on screen chemistry (the couple did end up briefly dating after the movie had premiered). The movie is based on the book of the same name by Nicolas Sparks, which itself is based on the real life story of his (now ex) wife’s grandparents. The film tells the story of Noah and Allie, a couple who meet and fall in love in the 1940s. It is told from the perspective of an elderly man who is reading the story from a notebook to another resident in another nursing home resident who is suffering from dementia. Just be warned: keep the tissues handy for the ending of this one!

Romeo + Juliet (1996)

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

This film has gained something of a cult following since it’s release. The title is based on the poem from 1717 Eloisa to Abelard by Alexander Pope. Jim Carey and Kate Winslet play the titular couple Joel and Clementine who begin a relationship after a train journey together. The couple are unaware that they were already a couple once but have had the memories of each other clinically erased after a painful breakup. As without any knowledge of each other they begin to bond again, could this mean that they were truly meant to be?

Brokeback Mountain (2005)

The beautiful epic western starring Jake Gyllenhall and Heath Ledger as rodeo cowboy Jack Twist and ranch hand Ennis Del Mar respectively. The two are hired by rancher Joe Aguirre as sheep herders in Wyoming. Whilst they are drinking one night on Brokeback Mountain, Jack makes a drunken pass at Ennis. Eventually Ennis reciprocates. In an attempt to try to deny his true feelings Ennis goes on to marry his longtime sweetheart, Alma (Michelle Williams), whilst Jack marries a fellow rodeo rider (Anne Hathaway). Despite both now being married the two men keep up their tortured and sporadic affair over the course of 20 years. Critically acclaimed and only just missing out on an Oscar for best picture this heartbreaking movie is a must see.

Carol (2015)

Based on The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith, this movie stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. Therese Belivet works at a department store in Manhattan where she encounters the beautiful Carol Aird, who is searching for a doll for her daughter. Carol accidentally leaves her gloves on the counter when buying a model train set instead. Therese mails the gloves back to her and Carol takes Therese out to lunch to thank her for it. But things take an unexpected turn when Therese develops strong feelings for Carol. That this movie received a ten minute standing ovation at it’s Cannes film festival premiere speaks volumes, and the two leads have been lauded for their seamless performances. What really makes the movie a masterpiece is the way Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger portray the bittersweet relationship.
