— Caroline —
I’ve become a pro covering up my bruises. Jeans instead of skirts. Long sleeves instead of short. Until that day he didn’t pull his punches. My face looked like I went one round in a boxing ring and lost. My parents could only see his status. Unless I wanted to end up another tragic statistic there was only one solution.
Run.
Then I met him.

— Dexter —
Everyone calls me Hawk. I’m VP of Primal Demons motorcycle club. I’ve been feeling a little restless with my life lately. The women may have different names, but they’re all the same. They only see status when they look at me. Unless I want to end up another clichéd’ biker there was only one solution.
Solitude.
Then I met her.

Excerpt from From The Ashes by Melinda Valentine

Oh my God, it burns. The liquid fire blazed a path to my belly as I gulped in air, hoping to cool my insides. All that accomplished was for me to choke on the air I was desperately inhaling. Why would anyone want to drink that? I felt like I could exhale fire. Literal fire.

“Whoa.” The man chuffed beside me. “Get the lady a water.”

The bartender appeared with a cold bottle of water. He cracked the seal, handing it over to me. Taking a long pull, I felt relief almost instantly. My breathing was erratic, but I couldn’t help it. Setting the water down without replacing the cap, I took a deep breath.

“You okay?” the man beside me questioned with a raised eyebrow.

His expression was both amused and concerned. He was the type of guy who would definitely get a second and third look from me had I seen him out somewhere. His black hair was pulled back in a short ponytail, and for some unfathomable reason I wanted to touch the hair covering his cheeks and chin. I’d never touched a man with a beard. His was neatly trimmed compared to a majority of the men milling about. It was his eyes that really drew me in though, reminiscent of the waters I played in as a child on Emerald Isle. So light and vibrant, completely at odds with the man they belonged to. After a moment of silence, he raised a questioning eyebrow yet again.

I had been sitting here staring at him. How embarrassing. I finally snapped out of it and nodded.

“Words, darlin’. I don’t read minds.” He winked.

I might have melted just a little. Then he smirked. Okay, a lot. I melted a lot. My brain screamed danger. Not because he would physically hurt me. I didn’t get that impression from him. Not after seeing his response to my face. No, it was deeper than that and something I refused to unpack at this time.

“Fine. Thank you.” I was not fine. Not by a long shot. Not only was I on my own for the first time in my life, but I was hiding from everyone I had ever known. One thing was for certain, though. I’d rather be alone and scared than anywhere near Christopher. What would I even tell these people when they asked my name? I couldn’t tell them the truth. As far as the world knew, Caroline was dead. If the authorities didn’t believe that, at the very least I was a missing person. I wanted to keep it that way. I was able to get by without saying anything to Becky. It was highly unlikely to fly here.

As if reading my mind the man, Hawk, Becky had called him, watched me. “So what’s your name?” He tapped his whiskey glass on the bar. The tumbler was instantly refilled with liquid fire. I shivered a moment from the recollection of its taste.

“I…” I didn’t want to tell him who I really was. And I also didn’t want to lie. Sliding a finger through the condensation on my water bottle, I decided to be honest with him to a degree. “I don’t know. I mean, I know, obviously. What I mean is, I don’t want to be her anymore.”

Interview With Melinda Valentine

Q: Welcome, Melinda. Tell us something about yourself that isn’t in your bio.

MV: I love animals. If I could have any wild animal as a pet, it would be a racoon or an otter. I often joke if my death were untimely, it was probably because I tried to pet something I shouldn’t.

Q: What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

MV: I spend time with my family. We’re very close and spend a lot of time together. As for my hobby, I’m totally in my puzzle era. I love building puzzles. I find it relaxes me.

Q: Name a few of your favorite authors or books.

MV: I love S.J Tilly, C.R. Jane, Sadie Kincaid, and Melanie Harlow. Just to name a few.

Q: Favorite book when you were a kid?

MV: The Chronicles of Narnia was my favorite series in elementary school. I have a copy I used to read to my kids at bedtime.

Q: Any advice for new writers?

MV: I can not stress this enough, everyone’s journey is different. There is no timeline you have to follow. Don’t compare where you are to where someone else is on their journey.

Q: Where can our readers find you on social media?

MV: You can stalk me on social media. Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and TikTok.

THIS or THAT?

Coffee or Tea? Coffee is Life
Book or Movie? Book
Morning or Night? Night
City or Country? Country
Spiders or Snakes? I will scream and run from both.
Summer or Winter? Winter
