Interview with David Kenneth Waldman
Q: How are the characters and themes tied together throughout the novel?
DKW: Dr David the male protagonist first meets Jacquie. and through her, he meets her baby sister Suzanne. She is his soulmate.
Themes:
- Romance and intimacy are not sex.
- Real love adds to a relationship –never subtracts. Love means gay love, family – children – and even gang members.
- Depression and other challenges can be overcome when a couple is supportive, loving, and nonjudgmental, and communication in a relationship is a vital part, the most important.
- Hope kept alive moving toward love matters.
- Love is inclusive – family, gay love, gang members, and adds to a relationship love
- Romance is not sex, nor love. Sex is a bonding of two people and creates intimacy —- What is a stronger bond is hugging and kissing.
Q: What was the initial inspiration behind this book? Were there any specific events or experiences that prompted you to write it?
DKW: The story and characters came into my mind and played out morning noon and night and I wrote down what the characters say. the events and experiences come directly from my life and are fictionalized to fit the character’s thoughts and actions.
The book was ready to come out and I never thought possible to write a novel let alone a romance novel. A story comes alive when it is told. That inspired me since the male protagonist is based on my life because of a trilogy with the second book a prequel and a memoir which the character in Weep for Love wrote as well as the novel. The third book is about his grandfather – an RAF flyer and nurse who became his grandparents.
Also ties into Weep for Love and is mentioned. Dr David was heavily influenced by his grandfather to risk his life to save others.
The story replayed and expanded for weeks every day and I realized this needs to be written down.
Q: What themes or messages do you hope readers will take away from the novel?
DKW: Sex is not love, romance strengthens love, hope is eternal, and love always adds on.
Love is also inclusive of family, friends, children, and gay love. Therefore the novel’s challenges to Suzie and David are the reality of a relationship.
Depression can be quelled but doesn’t mean a love relationship can not be initiated. Love, care, understanding, and communication with a couple can face together any challenges.
Q: Tell us about the main characters or concepts in your book. Are any of them inspired by real people or events?
DKW: Weep For Love captures an in-depth portrayal of a couple’s love affair. Not mollified with tiresome emotional tropes. Love is woven throughout tragedies, miscarriages, trauma, jealousy, character flaws, the blues, joy, or hope. An authentic love story encompasses family, friends, coworkers, and the heart of a romance.
Romance does not always produce happiness ever after. The future is filled with unknowns, not likely to be determined in advance. Regardless of how your life unfolds, a human need for love and affection is ubiquitous.
Suzanne Siobhan Brooke does not portray a natural person but is a fictional character. Based on an amalgamation of women’s individualities, who are cherished and loved. David Benjamin Bradley is a complex fusion of imaginary and author-lived experiences.
