Things We Never Got Over
Naomi wasn’t just running away from her wedding. She was riding to the rescue of her estranged twin to Knockemout, Virginia, a rough-around-the-edges town where disputes are settled the old-fashioned way…with fists and beer. Usually in that order.
Too bad for Naomi her evil twin hasn’t changed at all. After helping herself to Naomi’s car and cash, Tina leaves her with something unexpected. The niece Naomi didn’t know she had. Now she’s stuck in town with no car, no job, no plan, and no home with an 11-year-old going on thirty to take care of.
There’s a reason Knox doesn’t do complications or high-maintenance women, especially not the romantic ones. But since Naomi’s life imploded right in front of him, the least he can do is help her out of her jam. And just as soon as she stops getting into new trouble he can leave her alone and get back to his peaceful, solitary life.
At least, that’s the plan until the trouble turns to real danger.
Our Overview
“There’s a difference between taking care of someone because you love them and taking care of someone because you want them to love you,”
Naomi is a runaway bride who finds herself in an unfamiliar small town when her life falls apart. Newly single, jobless, and homeless thanks to her life-ruining twin sister, Naomi suddenly finds herself reasonable for her 11 year-old niece. It’s a ton of responsibility, especially for someone who seemed to spend her entire life cleaning up everyone else’s messes. As Naomi is struggling to keep herself together, in enters Knox.
Her gut tells her to stay away from the man, but the guy keeps coming to her rescue and helping her. Despite the fact that Knox himself doesn’t want anything to do with someone so high maintenance and down on her luck, he can’t quite seem to help himself. He puts her up in a cabin and gives her a job at her bar.
Knox, clearly falling for Naomi, forces himself away from her. His brother and friends are all adamant that distancing himself is the wrong call, but Knox is ultimately very stubborn in his decisions. The lovely Ms Score takes it into her own hands to put fear in Knox’s way to get him to open his eyes and stop walling himself away.
The pair, despite their hate-at-first sight, build a tumultuous and unique relationship which has its equal share of vulnerability and biting dialogue. As they become more open with each other, their emotions grow and the sexual and romantic tension grows taut to the point of finally snapping.
Our Review
Things We Never Got Over is an incredibly entertaining read. Not only did it draw out a lot of laughs, but there were a fair amount of emotional moments that had us stuck to the pages. Unlike most romance novels, one of the true shining gems of this novel was the supporting cast. It allowed the book to feel rich and full and helped create a lot more meaningful and realistic scenes.
Although this is a fairly long read, we think it is paced perfectly to represent the slow burn of their relationship; until it suddenly bursts into flame! The slow burn in this book was tantalisingly exceptional and made our reader hearts extremely happy.
