From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Small Great Things and The Book of Two Ways comes “a powerfully evocative story of resilience and the triumph of the human spirit.” (Taylor Jenkins Reid, author of Malibu Rising)

Diana O’Toole is perfectly on track. She will be married by thirty and done having kids by thirty-five. She will move out to the New York City suburbs, all while climbing the professional ladder in the cutthroat art auction world. She’s an associate specialist at Sotheby’s now. But her boss has hinted at a promotion if she can close a deal with a high-profile client. She’s not engaged just yet. But she knows her boyfriend, Finn, a surgical resident, is about to propose on their romantic getaway to the Galápagos—days before her thirtieth birthday. Right on time.

But then a virus that felt worlds away has appeared in the city. On the eve of their departure, Finn breaks the news: It’s all hands on deck at the hospital. He has to stay behind. You should still go, he assures her, since it would be a shame for all of their nonrefundable trip to go to waste. And so, reluctantly, she goes.

Almost immediately, Diana’s dream vacation goes awry. Her luggage is lost, the Wi-Fi is nearly nonexistent, and the hotel they’d booked is shut down due to the pandemic. In fact, the whole island is now under quarantine, and she is stranded until the borders reopen. Completely isolated, she must venture beyond her comfort zone. Slowly, she carves out a connection with a local family when a teenager with a secret opens up to Diana, despite her father’s suspicion of outsiders.

In the Galápagos Islands, where Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection was formed, Diana finds herself examining her relationships, her choices, and herself—and wondering if when she goes home, she too will have evolved into someone completely different.

Full Official Synopsis

Everything changes in a single moment for Dawn Edelstein. She’s on a plane when the flight attendant makes an announcement: Prepare for a crash landing. She braces herself as thoughts flash through her mind. The shocking thing is, the thoughts are not of her husband but of a man she last saw fifteen years ago: Wyatt Armstrong.

Dawn, miraculously, survives the crash, but so do all the doubts that have suddenly been raised. She has led a good life. Back in Boston, there is her husband, Brian, their beloved daughter, and her work as a death doula, in which she helps ease the transition between life and death for her clients.

But somewhere in Egypt is Wyatt Armstrong, who works as an archaeologist unearthing ancient burial sites, a career Dawn once studied for but was forced to abandon when life suddenly intervened. And now, when it seems that fate is offering her second chances, she is not as sure of the choice she once made.

After the crash landing, the airline ensures that the survivors are seen by a doctor, then offers transportation to wherever they want to go. The obvious destination is to fly home, but she could take another path: return to the archaeological site she left years before, reconnect with Wyatt and their unresolved history, and maybe even complete her research on The Book of Two Ways—the first known map of the afterlife.

As the story unfolds, Dawn’s two possible futures unspool side by side, as do the secrets and doubts long buried with them. Dawn must confront the questions she’s never truly asked: What does a life well lived look like? When we leave this earth, what do we leave behind? Do we make choices . . . or do our choices make us? And who would you be if you hadn’t turned out to be the person you are right now?

Detailed Description

In the very first chapter Dawn Edelstein finds herself plummeting towards earth in a plane crash. Miraculously she is one of the very few survivors. In the aftermath of the crash Dawn finds herself not thinking of her husband, Brian but of Wyatt, a long ago lost love. After she has received medical attention the airline staff ask her where she needs to go. Not where she wants to go. Dawn wonders if she should go home to her husband and daughter, Meret or to find Wyatt.

This is where the story splits into two timelines.

In one timeline “Water/Boston” she returns home to her husband and daughter. Dawn works as a death doula, this is someone who helps people make the journey towards death, dealing with any requests that a person may have in their final months, weeks or days to help them on their transition to death. She is married to Brian, a professor at Yale and they have one teenage daughter, Meret. There is some friction in the marriage as Brian had been spending time with Gita, a post graduate. Although he insists that nothing happened between them Dawn still has doubts and is angry that Brian missed their daughter’s birthday dinner when he was with Gita and didn’t answer the messages that she sent him.

In the second timeline “Land/Egypt” Dawn returns to Egypt. Before she met and married Brian Dawn was working after she had graduated from Yale and was pursuing a career in Egyptology. It was there that she met Wyatt and the two had begun an affair. When she was younger Dawn had to leave Egypt abruptly when her mother was diagnosed with cancer. After he mother’s death she became the guardian for her younger brother so never returned to Egypt.

But in the Land/Egypt timeline Dawn returns and reconnects with Wyatt, who is now working as Director of Egyptology at Yale and is working on unearthing a previously undiscovered tomb. Wyatt agrees to let Dawn stay and help out while she continues her work on “The Book Of Two Ways”, which was her research project until she had to leave. The Book Of Two Ways is an ancient Egyptian coffin text which includes a map that shows the two paths a person can take in the afterlife. On the dig the tomb is unearthed fully intact, with the earliest version of The Books Of Two Ways ever discovered inside.

In the “Water/Boston” timeline Dawn and Brian are working on their marriage, with Brian making an effort to be more considerate. Dawn also tries to support Meret as she goes through teenage insecurities, Meret is a very smart teenager but she has insecurities about her weight and when she goes to summer camp she gets bullied. Eventually when Meret enrolls on a new program she finds a PE teacher who is very supportive to her.

In Egypt Dawn and Wyatt begin to draw closer together once again, which makes Dawn wonder about how her life could have been if she had followed a different timeline.

In Boston Dawn takes on a new client, Win. Win is in her forties but she has terminal cancer, Dawn finds she relates to Win as they are of similar age. Win has a request of Dawn that will lead her to London. But just before Dawn leaves she makes a shock discovery about her own life that could change everything.

What follows is some twists and turns that could turn the world upside down for Dawn, Wyatt, Brian and Meret. Which reality is the right one and Dawn will find that she has some very big choices to make.

Our Review – ★★★★☆

The Book Of Two Ways is not a light read but Jodi Picoult books don’t tend to be anyway. There is plenty of information about Egyptology, which at times can be overwhelming. Jodi Picoult has clearly done her research here and the knowledge is evident but it can tend to bog the story down a bit. Having said that the premise here is very interesting.

The Egyptian Book Of Two Ways is about the two paths that a person can take in the afterlife – the water path or the land path, hence the Water/Boston and Land/Egypt chapters. It is when Dawn herself is faced with death in the plane crash that she begins to consider the two paths that she could have taken in life.

Jodi Picoult does an excellent job at weaving the two time lines together as Dawn considers what could have been but also what could yet be. At its very core this is a romance about Dawn and her lost love Wyatt. It is mired in Egyptology facts that can make the story feel lost at times but if you can wade through all the terminology then there is a very interesting, thought provoking story here.

Diana O’Toole is perfectly on track. She will be married by thirty, done having kids by thirty-five, and move out to the New York City suburbs, all while climbing the professional ladder in the cutthroat art auction world. She’s an associate specialist at Sotheby’s now, but her boss has hinted at a promotion if she can close a deal with a high-profile client. She’s not engaged just yet, but she knows her boyfriend, Finn, a surgical resident, is about to propose on their romantic getaway to the Galápagos—days before her thirtieth birthday. Right on time.

But then a virus that felt worlds away has appeared in the city, and on the eve of their departure, Finn breaks the news: It’s all hands on deck at the hospital.

Detailed Description

When we first meet Diane she has her life on track. Her life plan is well laid out – she wants to be married by thirty, have children by thirty-five, all the while climbing the career ladder in the art world. At the beginning of Wish You Were Here all of this is going as planned for Diane. She is almost thirty and is living with her boyfriend Finn. They have a dream vacation to the Galápagos Islands upcoming and Diane found a ring stuffed in the back of Finn’s drawers so she is fully expecting him to propose on their holiday so that box is ticked. She is working as an associate specialist at Sotheby’s and has just snagged a huge client for them so things are looking on track for her career plans too.

When talk begins of a new virus it is only at the peripheral of Diane’s world. She doesn’t think it’s going to be a big deal and she doesn’t think it will affect her. Much like the rest of the world in the very early stages of the pandemic Diane doesn’t see cause for alarm. But things begin to change. At first there are only a few people getting sick and in the hospitals but it doesn’t take long for alarm bells to start ringing. The streets begin to empty, the world begins to slow as fear takes over.

With days to go until thier dream vacation is due to begin Finn tells her that he can’t go with her. He is a resident surgeon at the hospital but before long it is all hands on deck. And though Finn is a surgeon is assigned to the fast filling covid wards. Finn knows that he can’t leave the hospital for a vacation but he tells Diane that she should still go. He tells her that it would be a shame to waste the trip as they won’t be able to get a refund. He also says it will be safer for her because he worries that he may bring the virus home to her.

Diane is reluctant at first but she agrees to go without Finn. It doesn’t take long for things to go wrong, Diane’s luggage goes missing on the flight and as she arrives on the boat to the Isabela Island in the Galápagos she learns that the Island is shutting down due to the covid pandemic. She has a moment to make a decision – should she return straight back on the boat that she just arrived on or should she stay? For once in her life Diane decides not to take the safe option and she chooses to stay.

It isn’t long before Diane is regretting her decision. The hotel she was booked into has shut down and Wi-Fi is almost non existent on the Island. Diane finds herself alone with no luggage and no place to stay. With the Island on shutdown and in quarantine until the borders reopen Diane has no where to go. She is filled with panic until she meets an elderly lady, Abuela, who offers her a place to stay. Diane gratefully takes her up on the offer.

Making the most of her time on the Island Diane begins to explore when she can, before curfew locks everyone down each day. One day whilst swimming by the beach she finds a young teenage girl who is cutting herself. Full of concern Diane tries to reach out but the girl shuts down. Diane also has an unsettling expreicne with a gruff, seemingly angry local man.

It isn’t long before Diane finds that both the young girl, Beatriz and the angry man, Gabriel are related to the kind lady who took her in. Gabriel is a single father to Beatriz and Abuela is his mother. In her time stranded Diane begins to connect with the family.

But with the Wi-Fi being sporadic Diane finds it difficult to keep in touch with home. When she does manage to get a connection then emails pour in from Finn. He uses the emails to Diane as a sounding board, telling her of the effects the pandemic is having back home. He tells her of his long days, of the dying and desperate patients that they try to save. And he talks of the new treatments that they are finding and trialing.

It is a world that seems so far away to Diane in her peaceful haven. Although she misses Finn and worries about the tough time he is having Diane finds herself blending into the Galápagos life and begins to feel less like a tourist as she spends more time with Beatriz and Gabriel. She begins to bond with both of them. And the longer Diane spends on the Galápagos the more she begins to question her carefully planned out life. Is marriage and children with Finn what she really wants. And also, is an art seller what she wants to be when her true love is really in the creation of art.

Diane is faced with doubt over things she was sure of and she needs to find the answers before her time on the Island comes to an end.

Our Review

Jodi Picoult does an amazing job of painting exactly what it was like in the early days of the covid pandemic. It’s not that long ago to us right now but even then it feels like a world away. But this is what we saw on the news or maybe some of us were unfortunate enough to experience it first hand.

In contrast to Finn’s story we have Diane finding her way in the Galápagos. After a terrible start to her holiday we watch as Diane bonds with Beatriz and Gabrielle. In contrast to the very real horrors described in Finn’s story the Galápagos Islands are described in beautiful detail. Although it may seem that this is a book about the covid pandemic it is really a book about choices, especially difficult ones. Diane is torn when she begins to find that maybe what she thought she always wanted isn’t actually what she wanted at all. Ultimately this book shows how during times of crisis perspective can be found and sometimes you have to do what’s right, not what is safe.

Frequently Asked Questions (warning potential spoilers ahead!)

What is Jodi Picoult Wish You Were Here about?

Wish You Were Here is about the start of the covid-19 pandemic but that’s not all it’s about. It is also a book about self discovery and perspective.

Is I Wish You Were Here a true story?

Wish You Were Here isn’t a true story but it is inspired by real life events.
If it is Gabriel at the end of Wish You Were Here is very much up to the reader’s perspective but we think that it was Gabriel!

Jodi Picoult’s first book is Song Of The Humpback Whale.
The Storyteller

Some stories live forever…

Sage Singer is a baker. She works through the night, preparing the day’s breads and pastries, trying to escape her loneliness, bad memories and her mother’s death. When Josef Weber begins to stop by the bakery, they strike up an unlikely friendship. They see in each other the hidden scars that others can’t.

The Storyteller Jodi Picoult: Detailed Description

The book is told from varying viewpoints, inter-spaced with vignettes of another story. In the vignettes we hear from a young adult named Amina, who lives in the past. She struggles to survive after her father dies and she takes on his bakery to be able to live. To make matters worse there is some kind of monster terrorising the village where she lives.

In the present we are introduced to Sage Summer. Sage is a young woman who tries to hide after she suffered facially disfiguring scars in an accident which we are initially not told the cause of. Sage’s parents both died within a few years of each other and she is estranged from her sisters. She works as a baker at night for a local bakery run by an ex-nun Mary. Sage likes the job because it enables her to avoid facing people and when she does she wears her long hair over her face to hide her scars.

We find that Sage is also having an affair with the local married mortician. Which she continues despite realising deep inside that it is wrong because she believes that she doesn’t deserve any better. Sage is a member of a grief group, a support group for people who are struggling to cope after losing someone in their lives.

An elderly man and his dog often come in into the cafe area of the bakery late in the day when Sage arrives for her shift. She recognises him from the grief group, he is a German man called Josef Weber. Sage finds herself striking up a conversation with the man. This is out of character for her as she usually avoids people. Despite the vast differences in the two, they strike up an unlikely friendship and begin to spend more time together. Sage visits Josef at his home. The two connect by talking, sharing their grief (Josef recently lost his wife of 51 years) and playing chess.

As the two draw closer Josef confides a terrible secret to Sage. He then asks for her help for him to find redemption and forgiveness. But Sage is appalled by the truth about Josef. And her first is reaction is that he deserves to be punished for his past.

After Josef admits to being a German officer in Autstvich, Sage finds it hard to correlate this gentle 95 year old man with the monster that he must once have been. Josef is seeking forgiveness for his past sins. The reason that he is seeking this from Sage is because although she herself is an self confessed Atheist, she is of Jewish descent. Therefore he believes that she can offer him the redemption that he seeks.

Sage is appalled by the truth about Josef and this is where Department of Justice agent Leo (who is Jewish himself) becomes involved. Leo’s job involves him being responsible for bringing people who have committed war crimes to justice. Together Leo and Sage seek to find the truth about Josef’s past but to do this they will need the help of Sage’s grandmother. Minka is a holocaust survivor that does not like to talk about the past and the horrors that she suffered.

Which brings us to by far the most important voice in the narrative which becomes Minka, Sage’s grandmother whose story proves to be the most important of them all.

Our review – ★★★★★

The Storyteller definitely confirms Jodi Picoult’s talent as a writer. Especially when it it comes to the difficult topics. In Part One of the story we are introduced to Sage. It is a little hard to feel much sympathy for Sage initially, she has clearly suffered a lot in her life but the way she views the wife and children of the married man she is having an affair with makes her come across as selfish and having little remorse for the people she is hurting. Another character who also garners little sympathy is Josef, even though like Sage finds, it is hard to believe that this gentle 95 year old man who shares his food with his dog and does so much work for the community is actually capable of the atrocities of his past.

It is in part two of this book that it really becomes engrossing. Minka opens up and tells Sage of everything she suffered as a young woman from Poland at the beginning and then throughout the rest of World War 2. The details and horrors of the concentration camps are starkly painted and everything that Minka went through is laid bare. It certainly isn’t an easy read but the writing is impeccable and everything seems horrifically believable. One of the main questions this book raises is are monsters born or raised. And are monsters capable of true remorse, and if redemption and forgiveness for the past really is possible when the past is so horrific.

Small Great Things

Ruth Jefferson is a labor and delivery nurse at a Connecticut hospital with more than twenty years’ experience. During her shift, Ruth begins a routine checkup on a newborn, only to find that she’s been reassigned to another patient. The parents are white supremacists and don’t want Ruth, who is African American, to touch their child. But then the baby goes into cardiac distress whilst Ruth is alone in the nursery.

Detailed Description

Ruth Jefferson is a labor and delivery (L&D) nurse. And she has been for twenty years. Initially, we are told the story of many other patients that Ruth helped to deliver their children, showing just what a great nurse she is. She is also a mother to Edison, who made the Highest Honors list for every semester of his high school career.

We are also introduced to Ruth’s past. Her mother worked as a maid for a rich, white family – The Hallowells. Ms Mina gave birth unexpectedly at home and Ruth’s mother was there to help her deliver. The children watching – Christina (Mina’s daughter), Adisa (Ruth’s sister who at the time went by the name Rachel before she legally changed it), and Ruth – were each affected differently by this event. Christina had her baby via surrogate, Adisa had five children and Ruth became a L&D nurse.

Back to the present, and a new couple come into the hospital where Ruth works. The mother Brittany gave birth the night before with a different nurse and Ruth is sent to assess the baby in the morning. Ruth does her job, finding that the baby has a heart murmur, which she notes to refer to the paediatrician. Once Ruth has finished her examination she finds that there is a problem – the parents of little Davis (named after the last president of the confederacy) are extremely racist white supremacists and have a problem with Ruth touching their child.

So, after Ruth’s assessment, they make a complaint. Afterwards Ruth is instructed by her superior to not touch the baby again. And a note to this effect is put on the baby’s file, that no African American personnel are to care for the child. Understandably Ruth is devastated both by the actions of the racist parents and her supervisor for allowing them to make this discriminatory decision without being challenged. But Ruth has no choice but to continue doing her job and obey the order.

Then, on a busy day, Ruth is left to keep an eye on Davis after his routine circumcision when the nurse in charge of him gets called into an emergency birth and there are no other nurses available. Which is when he goes into cardiac distress. Ruth hesitates before helping – should she disobey orders or should she help? Her first nursing instincts are to help and she begins to check the baby’s vitals but when she hears someone coming she steps back and pretends that she did nothing. Ruth’s supervisor Marnie bursts in and tells Ruth to help as they try to perform CPR. Soon the room is filled with activity as the doctors rush in and everyone tries to save the baby’s life. But it is to no avail and tragically the baby Davis cannot be saved.

Davis’ parents look for someone to blame and of course the target of their prejudiced hate is Ruth. Now Ruth is being charged with murder and she needs to rely on public defender Kennedy McQuarrie to prove her innocence.

Review – ★★★★★

Picoult’s writing never fails to impress us. She keeps us hooked all the way to the end, it’s almost impossible to put any of her books down. The very same applies to Small Great Things.

Small Great Things is told from the perspective of Ruth, Kennedy and the despicable Turk Bauer. All of the characters are very well written, even Turk. Picoult gives a detailed reason for the way he is, but it is not given as a way to excuse to behaviour. Turk is an angry racist, homophobic man with offensive tattoos. He regularly launches physical attacks on gay people or people of colour just as an outlet of his anger. His wife, Brittany is equally as abhorrent, often encouraging and joining in with the violence, she is also abusive to animals.

Ruth has worked hard all her life to get to where she is as a respected nurse. She is bringing up her son alone after her husband was killed in service. Edison is an exemplary young man, who does well in school and is in the process of applying to colleges. The two are very close and despite the struggles they face they are doing well until the court case blows up and threatens to send Edison off the rails.

Kennedy McQuarrie is a public defender who is married with a small child. Ruth’s case is her first murder trial and one which she is determined to win. Kennedy is convinced that she herself is not racist at all. From the off she tells Ruth that the case can’t be made about race as they will never win if they go down that route. Ruth reluctantly agrees because more than anything she wants to be there for her son.

But as the trial goes on Ruth shows Kennedy what it’s like to walk in her shoes. What exactly life is like for an African American living in America. Slowly Kennedy’s eyes are opened to the passive racism that occurs every day.

This is an excellently written book and it becomes engrossing as the trial continues towards it’s verdict. We wonder how many eyes will be opened and is there even redemption available for some of the worst characters in this book or do they even deserve it? This is a book that certainly makes you think, question yourself and it stays with you long after you have finished it.
