Bingeability – ★★★★★

Readers of The Love Hypothesis may be happy to know that Love, Theoretically includes a lot of STEM-focused dialogue and scenes. We are blessed with interesting Physics jargon which mostly went over our heads and Elsie’s MIT Interview. Whilst many of us may be interested, theoretically, in being a woman in STEM for those who are – you’ll surely be living vicariously through Elsie in her interview! Unlike other Hazelwood novels, this book is more of a slow-burner. This may put off some, but for us it kept us going. We truly couldn’t put this one down!

Characters – ★★★★★

Elsie’s character feels a little more dynamic than the characters of other Hazelwood novels. Being a ‘fake girlfriend’ is definitely an interesting element which didn’t only add to the plot, but it made Elsie feel more fleshed-out whilst addressing issues of the steps working-class people have to go through to be at an equal level to their middle-class piers. And for those who remember The Love Hypothesis, we’re blessed with a glimpse into Adam and Olive’s lives! Maybe this little throwback is what pushed us into the 5-star realm, but can you blame us?

Setting – ★★★☆☆

There was nothing particularly striking about the setting for this novel. First-time readers will likely love it, but for those who have binged all of Hazelwood’s novels before, there isn’t much difference in the setting here as opposed to Love on the Brain and The Love Hypothesis.

Storyline – ★★★★★

We can gladly say that the setting is the only part of this novel that failed to be shaken up. The storyline goes at a much slower pace, allowing for the slow-burn romance between Jack and Elsie. It didn’t feel like a whirlwind romance, which makes sense considering the romance comes from Elsie realizing she can truly be herself around Jack. And that takes time. The pacing of this book is definitely a huge improvement: we can see Hazelwood’s craft refining before our very eyes. Moreover, whilst Hazelwood isn’t a stranger to addressing deeper commentaries in this novel, the discussion and themes of the struggles of the working class were surprisingly written well. However, such themes don’t dampen the lightheartedness of a Hazelwood classic!

With romantic tension that will have you on the edge of your seat, student e-mails that will have you giggling, references to our beloved Taylor Swift and our guilty pleasure Twilight, Love, Theoretically is a welcomed addition to the Adult Romance genre. And an even more welcomed addition to my bookshelf. It’s fun, it’s cute, it’s an easy read. If you’re in a reading slump, we guarantee this will knock you right out of it.

Bee is a brilliant neuroscientist. After being offered a spot co-leading a once-in-a-lifetime project at NASA, she quits her underwhelming job and sets off to Houston. She is dismayed when she realises she’ll be partnered with the one and only Levi Ward – her nemesis from grad school.

She is optimistic and tries to repair bridges but Levi airs her emails and reprimands her about the dress code on her first day. Apparently, he doesn’t care for her purple hair and piercings.

As they continue to work together, Bee and Levi start becoming less… hostile. Levi even comes to rescue her when she gets herself stuck in a cemetery overnight! Bee can only wonder how Levi can be so amicable when she knows truly that he hated her for reasons beyond her knowledge in grad school.

After some heart-to-heart, we learn that Levi grew up in an unhealthy home and attends therapy. Even at the age of 32, Levi is still unable to stand up for himself in front of his parents. Bee steps in to come to his defence.

The pair of coworkers grow closer together and soon Bee comes to the realisation that Levi never hated her in the first place. He’s liked her all along! The pair quickly reconcile and get together, in more ways than one.

Love on the Brain is a quirky insight into the love life of two NASA project leaders. Full of ups, downs, tears – and mostly laughter, this is a must-read for all STEM and romance fans alike!

Readers of The Love Hypothesis may be happy to know that Love on the Brain includes a lot more STEM-focused dialogue and scenes. This adds to the believability of the story and really makes their career more interesting, unfortunately, it may be a little difficult for some people to follow. Aside from having to put down the book to go down a Google Search rabbit hole, this book was entertaining and cute enough to sit down and absorb via osmosis.

Characters – ★★★★☆

Bee is loud, forthright and obsessed with cats. What isn’t to love? She’s the perfect counterpart to Levi, who finds it hard to communicate his real emotions. Not to mention the side characters absolutely stole our hearts! They’re totally over-the-top and goofy and I loved every scene with them.

Setting – ★★★★★

It might not be for everyone but we loved how Ali Hazelwood ramped up the lab scenes in Love on the Brain in comparison to her previous release, The Love Hypothesis. It might be every STEM student’s dream to someday work at NASA, so there will be plenty of readers living vicariously through Bee.

Storyline – ★★★☆☆

Hazelwood takes the themes of her previous book, The Love Hypothesis and changes enough that it doesn’t feel repetitive. Hazelwood handles the complicated aftermath of Levi’s uncomfortable family dynamics in a way which isn’t too overt as to lower the tone of the book. Overall, the elements are similar to her previous book at its core. So if you loved The Love Hypothesis, you will definitely love Ali Hazelwood’s Love on the Brain.

With romantic tension that will have you on the edge of your seat, a side-spun Twitter romance, spicy scenes that will make you blush and a gaggle of side characters who are a barrel of laughs, Love on the Brain is a nice addition to the Adult Romance genre. It’s fun, it’s cute, it’s an easy read and most importantly; we now know a lot about Marie Curie!

The second story in Hazelwoods new STEMinish Novella series, Under One Roof is 127 pages of quirky dialogue and Hazelwood’s iconic characters.

Sadie finds herself stuck in an elevator with the man who she hates with her full chest who also shattered her heart. For a full 24 hours, we’re going to see exactly what happened between the two and see how their relationship changes once they’re rescued from the elevator.

Sadie meets Erik and goes home with him in the same day, it’s clear they have an instant connection. A whirlwind of love at first sight. They bond over soccer and their mutual love of engineering (albeit at different companies). After his betrayl, Sadie is hurt and refuses to talk to him.

Throwing us back and forth between the present and the past, Sadie and Erik are forced to talk things out between them in the elevator and we find out exactly what Erik did to hurt Sadie so deeply. Their fiery relationship hasn’t smoldered out entirely, and by the time the elevator is fixed the pair are ready to rekindle their short stint at love once again.

Readers of The Love Hypothesis may be happy to know that Hazelwood’s Stuck With You is just as bingeable – if not more so! Hazelwood did a great job in the pacing of this novella, shooting between the present and the past made it very difficult to ever put this book down!

Sadie is a quirky protagonist in all the right ways. Despite being a successful engineer, she still has superstitions which she must honour. We’ve all been there. Who doesn’t have a lucky pair of underwear? Erik and Sadie’s meetcute was adorable and we were rooting for them from the start. (Not to mention Erik’s pet!)

Setting – ★★★★★

Although the first in the STEMinist novellas, Ali Hazelwood’s Stuck With You has little actual science talk. It works perfectly for the storyline though, with half of it taking place in an elevator. The whole ‘enemies forced in a small space to hash it out together’ trope is a little overdone, but Hazelwood puts such a perfect spin on it that it feels like a lovely freshness to the genre.

With a little bit of withholding information from the reader, it was really exciting to experience the reason for Sadie and Erik’s falling out unravelling throughout the novella! It was cute, fun, really engaging to read and we were a little disappointed when we realised the novella came to an end!

There’s something about reading Ali Hazelwood’s writing that consistently hits that sweet spot. Whilst not the most realistic of relationships, watching how the past and present meld together to show the true colours of Sadie and Erik was really endearing to experience. With perfect pacing and characters that I truly liked, Ali Hazelwood’s Stuck With You might be our favorite STEMinist novella yet!

When environmental engineer Mara’s mentor passes away, Mara inherits half of a gorgeous house. The other half is already inhabited by Liam Harding. A grumpy lawyer who works for a big oil company – totally against everything Mara stands for! It’s no surprise that Mara and Liam consistently butt heads and have some interesting… conversations.

Mara’s sunshine persona causes sparks against Liam’s grumpy attitude. The pair can never seem to agree. Despite the teasing about each other’s polarising careers, there was still an undercurrent of mutual respect.

It was only an eventuality that their playground teasing would evolve into real mutual attraction. Although the novella is short, being in such consistent close quarters with someone forces relationships to burn quickly – so the fast-paced nature of their relationship makes sense.

Different from her other books, in Under One Roof we see Ali Hazelwood explore the relationship not between co-workers, but between roommates. Roommates whose careers are the antithesis of each other! Their relationship grew fast and it was exciting seeing how quickly the pair grew to tolerate, like, then love each other.

There’s something about reading Ali Hazelwood’s writing that just makes us smile. Under One Roof is a strong contender for the #1 place in making my cheeks ache from smiling so much. Hannah is so headstrong and Ian is such a softie – it really had us in a chokehold! Not to mention the injury and peril Hannah was in, this is definitely a gripping novella, even for all its length.

Characters – ★★★★★

Hannah’s lax attitude to school is a little funny considering that she ended up working for NASA, but hey, academia isn’t for everyone. It was interesting that her and Ian seemed to clash in this regard.

Underneath Hannah’s tough exterior is a very obvious vulnerable side which Ian’s tender saviour complex seems to nourish perfectly. It seems these two really are fit perfectly!

Setting – ★★★★★

Maybe the whole arctic exploration thing isn’t for everyone, but it seems like the perfect amount of faraway for these two NASA scientists. It added a sense of seclusion and danger which wasn’t present in Hazelwood’s earlier novellas.

Storyline – ★★★★★

We appreciated how much science-talk came to play in this novella! Just the right amount to keep things interesting without forcing us to go off and google a thing or two mid-read. The reunion of Ian and Hannah was funny and a little awkward, but it was nice to see that two people can have multiple chances to set things off on the right foot, for good.

Ali Hazelwood knows what she is doing! The enemies-to-lovers trope never fails, and this is another hit out of the park. We loved every moment of this book. It had us smiling the entire way through, even moreso because Hazelwoods heroines are so adorkable!

The Love Hypothesis follows Olive Smith, a 26-year-old graduate student of Biology at Stanford University. Losing her mother to pancreatic cancer, Olive’s research focuses on pancreatic cancer.

Before her interview for PHD candidacy at Stanford, she meets Adam Carlsen, a fellow biologist. His words convince her that grad school is the right path. Two weeks later she accepts her offer to study at Stanford.

Almost three years later, Olive is trying to convince her best friend that she is over her ex-boyfriend so her friend will date her ex. Naturally, her best friend is apprehensive. Olive lies and says she has a date with someone, on that same night her friend sees her working in the lab. Desperate to prove she is over her ex, Olive kisses the first man she sees – Adam.

Known for being abrasive and mean, Adam demands an explanation. Olive explains herself and runs away, embarrassed and hoping she’ll never see him again.

A few days later, Olive’s friend interrogates her about her kiss. Before Olive can explain herself, Adam turns up and acts sweetly towards her, which finally convinces Olive’s friend that their relationship is genuine. As Adam and Claire talk it out later, Olive admits that she wants to keep the charade going until her friend and her ex are together. A Harvard researcher responds to Olive’s request for better equipment and plans to meet her at Stanford.

During a fake date with Adam, the researcher, Tom Benton, joins them. He is a friend of Adam’s and wants to meet the girlfriend everyone had been talking about. After listening to Olive’s research pitch, Tom takes a look at her reports and offers her a space in his lab next year.

Adam helps Olive prepare for an important speech at a research conference. Adam’s schedule overlaps with Olive’s speech so he can’t attend as he promised.

After the panel, Tom approaches Olive and forces himself on her. In response to Olive’s threat to report him, Tom threatens to publish her research under his name. He insults her and her work. Later, Adam finds Olive crying in their hotel room. She doesn’t tell Adam who is the cause for her upset and the two have a heart-to-heart. Emotions rise and the two spend the night together.

Over the next few days, Olive’s life is a whirlwind of emotions. She breaks things off with Adam, feeling that the original contract is getting messy with emotions. When she meets her friends, they convince her to report Tom. Tom is later fired from Harvard, and Olive and Adam get back together.

Olive finds a better placement closer to Stanford and the pair stay in California together.

This book must be sold with a poltergeist in each copy – the pages kept turning themselves! Honestly, I’m a little surprised at how quickly I read The Love Hypothesis book. There’s something very sweet about this book that makes it not only a delight to read, but incredibly easy to read.

Characters – ★★★☆☆

I’ll always have a soft spot for women in STEM, so it’s no surprise that I fell in love with Olive. It’s heartwarming to see a character go through an unimaginable tragedy and use the trauma for a tremendous amount of post-traumatic growth. Olive has a knack for taking difficult situations, and despite being deeply affected by them, using them to better herself.

Setting – ★★★★★

It’s always interesting when reading STEM-focused books. Like stepping into a world I’m half-familiar with and half-in awe of, it always makes for an interesting and provocative environment. Watching a young woman navigating such a space is motivating and inspiring to see and we couldn’t help but cheer for Olive each step of the way. We hope to see more settings like The Love Hypothesis!

Storyline – ★★★☆☆

It’s a little cliche – but it works. It’s a cheery and easy read whose main focus is on the slow and eventual getting together of Adam and Olive. The entire timeline of the story is well-paced, cute, riddled with miscommunication and moments that made us want to shake the couple into sitting down and talking. We wish there was a little more focus on the side characters, but overall we thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience!

The Love Hypothesis book is perfect for fans of YA novels and those who like a light-hearted read. It was an easy read and very easy to digest. Fans of the Heartstopper series or the Boys I’ve Loved Before series will bite into this book perfectly!
