“Why did you do that?” Fury bowled through her lowered voice. Her heart rate was speeding like a freight train, and it wasn’t solely from the encounter with the drunken groomsman.

His thick, arched eyebrows tugged to the center of his forehead. “Why did I–? The guy had you plastered against him, Charity, against your will. What was I supposed to do? Let him assault you?”

“I had it handled, Kolby. I didn’t need any interference from you.”

“How? The guy was twice your size and weight, not to mention piss drunk. You can’t predict what someone like that is going to do.”

“I. Had. It. Handled,” she spat through tight lips.  “You didn’t need to ride in on your macho white horse to save me. I’m not a little girl who needs protection from daddy. I can take care of myself.”

The expression on his face went from confusion to hurt and then morphed into anger. Beetled brows tugged down over those blue eyes that haunted her in dreams, the mouth she’d fantasized about pressing her own against, tight at the corners and bent into an upside-down U. His nostrils flared once, then relaxed again when he let out a breath shrouded in annoyance.

It was evident in the derision that framed his expression he didn’t believe she could take care of herself. She braced for a verbal unleashing. Kolby’s ego was a solid wall of masculinity built with a cocky, know-it-all base that he never attempted to hide.

He was everything she despised in a man and it killed her to be so damn drawn to him.

Their working relationship had started out rocky from the first day they’d met. He was the senior employee, fabulous at his job, and had enjoyed a relaxed, flirty relationship with the previous assistant. He’d sized Charity up with those hooded bedroom eyes and she got the feeling he was trying to gage how fast he could get her in his bed.

She’d known and dealt with guys like Kolby O’Brian her entire life. Good looking, cocky, self-assured men who lived life as if it was all going to burn away tomorrow. No long-term relationships, no commitment to anything but themselves and their pleasures.  And they went through women like water goes through new pipes – fast and free-falling.

Charity had shaken his hand – ignoring how he held it just a smidge longer than necessary – and then treated him with an air of professional disinterest that had served her well when put in challenging situations during her life.

He’d regarded her with a quizzical eyebrow lift and nothing else.

Working alongside him for three years, watching the endless parade of female wedding guests throw themselves into his waiting and willing arms, grated. He’d never put a move on her, something she was thankful for. At the same time, she couldn’t help the stupid little crush that had developed. When he wasn’t acting like God’s gift to female-kind, he was actually a smart and witty guy, in addition to a talented photographer. She knew the flirting served a purpose with the wedding party attendants when he was photographing them. It relaxed his subjects, and got them to smile naturally, not the fake kind everyone hated seeing in photos.

But still. She wished he could suspend his man-whore ways just once.

“Oh, you had it handled, did you?” His mocking sarcasm chafed. “Exactly how did you have it handled, Charity? Were you gonna throw a drink in his face? Oh wait.” He glanced down at her fisted hands. “No drink? Were you gonna scream?” He looked over one shoulder and then the other. “Sorry, no one around to hear it. Tell me exactly how you were gonna handle a six-foot drunk with dick-lust and no one around to prevent him from doing what he wanted?”

He folded his arms across his massive chest and all she could think of doing was drop kicking him in the balls.

Sanity prevailed, though, and she didn’t. Well…sanity and a serious need to get this wedding ended without the benefit of an ambulance or the police being called.

Exclusive Interview with Peggy Jaeger

Q: Why did you write this series?

PJ: When I finished the MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN SERIES, I didn’t think the stories were done. I’d introduced some characters in the books that I felt would benefit from having their own stories, and one of those was local matchmaker Olivia Joyner. As a young widow, she dedicated her life to finding matches for other people, but never herself. I wanted to give her an HEA. I also wanted to make sure the other characters who’d warmed my heart in the series, also found their matches. And they did.

Q: The books in this series are all sweet with heat romances, while you are known for steamier books. Why the departure?

PJ: I would like to say I planned that, but honestly, it’s just the way the stories told themselves to me. For Mix and Match,  I had a friends 2 lovers trope working and was waiting for Donovan and Jasmine to get physical. When they didn’t, it seemed, somehow, right, that the story didn’t push them together. I found that this push and pull of will they or wont they actually enhanced the romance for me, so I decided to try it for the next book and then the next. I liked not having them all jump into a physical romance but discover one another through talking, interacting, and helping one another navigate through their issues.

Q: What about small-town romances appeals to you?

PJ: I live in a small town and my husband in very well known by 95% of the populous since he is their eye doctor and has done cataract surgery on almost everyone in town that needed it. I know what small towns are like – the gossip that runs rampant, the feuds that last generations, the way lifelong residents make newbies feel – either good or bad. I like generational stories, and small towns afford me the opportunity to write those as well. Also, because I do live in a small town myself, I know how “things” work and what’s acceptable and isn’t. For instance, I’ve stopped going out to eat with my husband for the past few years because whenever we would be in a restaurant trying to enjoy an evening out together, invariably a patient would stop at our table, tell me husband something about their eyes, and ask for a drive by consult. After a while I got a little sick of this. It’s a blessing that in a small town everyone knows who you are, but it’s also a curse. And that juxtaposition makes for great fiction writing and conflict set-up.

Q: Would you ever use a matchmaker yourself?

PJ: I won’t say no, but I’ve been married for 40 years so by now I’m way off the marriage market. Would I have in my younger years? Maybe. I hate the bar scene, and like Jasmine Green from Mix and Match, dating apps give me hives!

Chapter One: Cins The Goblin Queen

I was their queen, and my subjects knew me well enough to clear my path through the labyrinthine corridors, though their whispers and stolen glances lingered like spider-silk.

Let them talk. I moved past, my silvery skin catching the lantern light in molten ripples. The humans had a name for me, Cins, whispered in their legends like a curse. At the harvest season, particularly on All Hallows’s Eve, the barrier activated and revealed itself, separating our two worlds. During the season, goblins celebrated the bloodfest inviting humans into the Labyrinth for fun and sport. If a human showed particular superiority, they could become one of our servants, contingent upon their decision to abandon their own world. I hated the ritual, finding it cruel.

 I turned into a private corridor, and a parade of curious eyes followed, too loud to ignore. Rex, my trustworthy advisor, appeared beside me wearing a crooked smile and up to his trickster ways.

“The festival won’t bite,” Rex teased, already on a roll.

I rolled my eyes, amused despite myself.

“Some of us have other obligations besides entertaining those of the court,” I said.

He grinned wider, matching my pace with unnerving ease.

“Such as avoiding your own harvest celebration?” His melodic voice could have charmed the walls into crumbling.

We moved through the heart of the maze, the air thick with excitement. Goblins scurried in every direction, arms laden with lanterns, streamers, and curious objects the humans called pumpkins. Despite my supposed absence, the Renewal festival was three weeks away, and the preparations were nearly complete, a testament to their dedication or possibly their desire to impress me.

With his massive amber eyes, Rex studied me, and his gaze seemed to possess a level of awareness that was unsettling.

“Perhaps I could find you a suitable disguise. A masked woman is a less obvious queen.”

“Less obvious than my recent declarations to be left alone?” My voice carried an edge of humor, even as I resisted the pull of his teasing. “I’ll not risk any incident.” I watched as an unfortunate goblin entangled in decorations tumbled to the floor.

Rex snickered at the goblin’s misfortune. “What harm could there be in a little chaos or a wager?”

Q: What draws you to write stories with magic, monsters, or mayhem?

JA: The supernatural allows us to break the shackles of the restrictions of our environment and ask the questions what if… the opportunity to broaden our horizon to the possibilities of outcome.

Q: Which of your characters would you trust to protect you in a supernatural showdown—and which one would absolutely sell you out?

JA: My archangels and shifter alpha men would protect me at all costs even if it meant their own lives. In my Yellowstone Series David who appears to be an upstanding guy would sell me for the highest coin if it benefited him as well as the Winter King in my Archangel series book 4.

Q: What’s a recurring theme or symbol that keeps showing up in your work—whether you mean for it to or not?

JA: Themes of abandonment, found family, and quest consistently appear, even unintentionally. Runes, sigils, and magic consistently appear throughout the story in many different forms.

Q: Do you plot everything out like a prophecy—or write by the seat of your broomstick?

JA: I’m somewhere in the middle. I meet my characters like any good friend and get to know them. I love ease dropping in on their lives and figuring out their quirks, fears, and dreams. Then I write their story, it unfolds like life one peel at a time.

Q: If your writing were a potion, what would its ingredients be?

JA: Potion for Writing

1 Cup of Inspiration: Gather ideas from your favorite books, art, music, or nature.

2 Tablespoons of Imagination: Envision characters, worlds, or scenarios. Let your mind wander without restrictions.

A Pinch of Serendipity: Embrace randomness by using tarot cards to choose plot elements or character traits.

3 Drops of Collaboration: Share your ideas with a writing buddy or join a writer’s group for feedback and fresh perspectives.

4 Ounces of Serenity: Find a cozy, quiet space free from distractions. Perhaps light a scented candle or play soft background music.

1 Scoop of Humor: Don’t take yourself too seriously! Infuse your writing with a lighthearted touch or amusing anecdotes.

For the final touches…add… a splash of adventure, a whisk of laughter and inject emotion.

Serve Fresh: Once your potion is mixed and your writing is flowing, pour yourself a cup of tea, coffee, or better yet a glass of wine and settle in, and start writing.

Q: Which fictional world would you pack your bags and move to—no questions asked?

JA: The realm of the light fae or the elfin world in the Nordic pantheon.

Q: Are you more of a haunted mansion, enchanted forest, or cursed seaside town kind of writer?

JA: Enchanted forest type of writer with a playful curiosity of the unexpected. The connection with nature and all her elements.

Q: What’s one thing readers would be surprised to learn about you?

JA: That’s tough, oh I know. I don’t like chocolate really, I don’t. I’m a carrot cake or butterscotch kinda girl.

Q: If you had to be cursed with one supernatural trait forever, what would you choose?

JA: Potion making, old fashion apothecary of witches and spells. I like to be gifted with witch/fae magic.

Q: Tea, coffee, or the blood of your enemies? (Okay… or something else entirely?)

JA: Cold chardonnay with a book boyfriend, that will make me happy. Or better yet my very own blue/green dragon shifter who’s madly in love with me.

Q: What is your favorite trope to write and why?

PJ: Found family.  There’s something magnetic about broken people choosing each other, carving out a place where they belong. That’s also why I love writing why choose relationships.  At their core, they’re about loyalty, devotion, and a fierce love that refuses to let go.

Q: Why did you choose your setting?

PJ: All my books are set in Yorkfield—a fictional city where organized crime rules the streets and an elite university sits right in the middle of the chaos. It’s gritty, violent, and brimming with secrets. So when it came time to write a university story, Yorkfield U was a perfect setting for privilege and corruption to collide.

Q: What were some challenges while writing this book?

PJ: Writing Eva meant putting my own heart on the page—her insecurities about her body, the messy push-and-pull between self-love and self-doubt, and the constant tension of being both desired and dismissed. Those scenes have pieces of me in them, and it hurt to pour the words out.

Q: What was the highlight of writing this book?

PJ: Reader reactions, hands down. It’s wild and fun and I love it so much.  This is the first time people are sliding into my DMs just to scream about the story—to tell me they can’t stop thinking about Eva, Alek, Tristan, and Cole. Seeing readers go feral over these characters has been absolutely amazing.

The town was cute. I was too busy feeling grumpy and resentful to explore when we moved here a few weeks ago. I turned down a small side street, stopping with wide eyes at the cute bookstore with an American flag fluttering in the breeze out front. I closed my eyes, inhaling deeply as I opened the door.

“Miss? Are you all right?”

“Just a second…,” I raised a finger with my eyes still closed. The smell of books was my drug.

Real books.

Leather-bound.

Old, mixed with the smell of freshly printed paperbacks…I was a book whore.

Unashamedly.

My favorite place where we used to live was the old thrift shop where I could scoop up ten or twelve for a dollar. Mom boxed them all up and returned them as donations last year when I was in school. I cried. Literally cried. She just didn’t get it or me. She’s not evil or mean. She just doesn’t understand me the way I don’t her.

An old man shuffled from around the counter. His wire-rimmed glasses sat perched on the bridge of his nose. His grey hair was crazy like an old professor. But his smile was the knowing one. “I’ve waited my whole life for a girl like you.”

I smiled. “I think I just found heaven. Are you hiring?”

He shrugged. “More like retiring. We don’t get much business. People these days like to read on their devices.”

“It’s just not the same,” I scoffed.

“Oh, will!” I set off toward the back of the store. My hands rubbed together, giddy at the collection. He had classics. The ones banned in schools.

I got lost, reading blurb after blurb, waiting for that zing when one would entice me. I laughed out loud as I perused the sci-fi section finding “Bound by the Alien.” Apparently, it was a BDSM romance where a hot alien man takes his human to the stars in more ways the one.

I skimmed a few pages out of humor, but soon found myself wrapped in the story due to good writing. Just as a rather in-depth love scene started to unfold—I closed the book, red-faced. I had pictured the alien man’s face to be Angelo’s. When alien man was tracing his fingertips across the woman’s spine—it was Angelo’s golden eyes and hair I saw, lit with desire.

I was losing it.

There was no other explanation.

I placed the book back on the shelf, scooped up a collection of poetry written by an Argentine and translated, and found a good coming-of-age fiction by an Indie author. But alien man and his woman… were still in my mind. I went back for it, hid the paperback in the middle of my stack, and headed for the register.

The owner didn’t even raise a brow as he rang me up. He carefully placed my purchases in a bag and handed them over with a smile. “I hope you’ll be back.”

“You know I will.” Especially since he only charged me for two books.

I left the bookstore feeling lighter.

Fuck the Princes.

Their bullshit wasn’t real life. Their made-up drama can’t touch me. I kept walking down the small street under the shade of oak trees whose leaves were still green. I smiled in delight as the street turned into another street leading to a small park. No one was there. I found a huge tree in the shade, rested my back against the trunk, and opened my bag.

I started with the poetry, but soon switched back to raunchy sci-fi. I got lost in the whispered words of love and romance. Something I’d never had. Teenage boys suck at that shit anyway. Soon, the sounds of a wireless speaker blasting hip-hop came from across the park. It was annoying but not enough to rip my eyes from the pages of my book. I blocked out the sounds of a bouncing basketball, the shouts of players on the court across from me as alien man married his human bride in an intergalactic ritual involving honey, wax, and red roses.

“Hey!” I shouted as the book was ripped from my hands just when the wedding night was getting interesting. Thomás cleared his throat, held the book high and started reading every lusty detail in a booming voice.

I was dead.

My life was over from humiliation.

My whole body turned red in embarrassment. “…his touch was fire on my skin. Drakkon kissed a trail down to my breasts before his double tongue rolled each one of my nipples. I was so wet for him. His member was twice the size of any male human. It hurt at first, but then as he thrust, I screamed in pleasure at how he filled me…”

Howls of laughter erupted from the guys on the court. “Damn, new girl. You read some kinky shit.”

“I’ll be your alien man.” Angelo trotted over and I just withered. If he only knew in my head, he already was. Angelo was tanned perfection. Sweat dripped from his naked torso, down his abs. He caught me looking. I jumped, snatching back my book from Thomás’s hands, grabbed the rest of my things, and tried to rush off when my arm was grabbed, swinging me back around.

My eyes widened as Thomás grabbed me. Behind him, facing the other direction, was a familiar back. It was coated in a fine sheen of sweat. His taunt muscles were covered in that bold ink I was entranced by earlier. The guy turned.

Galen.

It was Galen. A.K.A. King of the Princes. The look of pure hatred in his eyes when ours locked had my heart beating faster than the heroine’s in the book that was clutched in my hands. I knew his dirty little secret. I wonder if the rest of his crew did too.

He mouthed the word “Princess.” The action hit me like a shot. Even if he hated me, he’d still choose me. My arm burned from where Thomás still held it.

“Let me go. Now!”

“Sure thing, princess.” His hold loosened, his fingers rubbed up and down the red marks he had made.

“My name’s Jen,” I snapped.

Thomás, leaned down, his minty breath made my lips tingle as he spoke so close against them. “Kiss me now, and I’ll delete the video I just took. Deny me, and it gets posted to my Snapchat story.”

“You wouldn’t?”

His brow rose as he hovered inches above me.

Angelo frowned. “You hurt her.”

“Not yet, but we will.” Thomás finally let me go, smirking as he noticed my heartbeat thrumming hard.

My eyes cut to Angelo’s, pleading. But he shook his head. I knew there was no way out. Not even the “nice” one would help. All the shame and joking dissipated. What was left between the four of us, hanging in the air, was heavy. Charged with what was to come.

Q: Your debut novel, Yacht Club Boy Summer, pulled back the curtain on privilege and summer love. What inspired you to dive into that world—and what message did you hope readers would walk away with?

JTH: I grew up fascinated by the way summer has its own rhythm—a time when everything feels suspended between what’s real and what’s possible. Those fleeting months of freedom always felt electric to me, full of first crushes, late-night confessions, and moments that stay burned into your memory long after the season ends. Writing Yacht Club Boy Summer was my way of capturing that magic, but also exploring the flip side: the pressure, the social divides, and the way privilege can shape a story before it even begins.

A lot of the emotions in the book came from my own summers—the kind where a single glance across a crowded beach could set your heart racing, or where a romance felt like the whole world, even if it was destined to be temporary. I wanted readers to feel that rush of nostalgia and excitement, but also see the realness underneath all the glossy summer perfection. More than anything, I hoped to remind people that love stories, no matter where they happen, are just as complicated, messy, and transformative as the people living them.

Q: Both Breaking the Bad Boy and your upcoming Lakeview High series lean into the emotional tension of high school dynamics. What draws you to writing about teenage power struggles and romance?

JTH: High school is this intense, unforgettable chapter of life where everything feels bigger than it is—friendships, heartbreak, power dynamics, even just walking into the cafeteria. I think that’s why I’m drawn to writing about it: the stakes feel so high because, in that moment, they really are. Those years shaped so much of who I am, and I love channeling that raw energy into my stories.

For me, teenage power struggles and romance are about more than drama; they’re about identity and resilience. First love, betrayal, figuring out where you belong—all of it leaves a permanent mark, and I think readers connect to that nostalgia and intensity, no matter their age. Writing Breaking the Bad Boy and the Lakeview High series lets me dive into those messy emotions and explore what it means to grow up, fall hard, and find strength in unexpected places.

Q: If one of your books were turned into a streaming series tomorrow, who would you cast as your main couple—and what’s the one scene you’d insist stay exactly as written?

JTH: If Breaking the Bad Boy ever made it to streaming, I’d love to see Jacob Elordi as Galen—he has that perfect mix of danger and vulnerability that makes Galen impossible to resist. For Jen, I’d cast Hailey Fuchere; she has this natural sweetness and quiet strength that would make Jen’s journey feel so authentic.

The one scene I’d fight to keep exactly as written? The birthday party scene. It’s such a turning point—it’s messy, charged, and full of that intoxicating mix of danger, attraction, and power shifts that define their relationship. It’s the moment that sets everything in motion, and I’d want viewers to feel every ounce of tension and longing that’s on the page.

When Lex woke up, she blinked into the sun. With each blink, searing pain throbbed through her head. Where was she? She blinked again and her pain turned into a throb. Seagulls cawed overhead and she heard the crashing of waves. Shit. She was stranded. Somewhere. She stretched out and then groaned as she sat up, turning to look at the charred remains of the driftwood fire and Ben. She put her fingers gently to her head, sand falling from her forearms onto her bare legs.

She looked down to see that she must have opened her jeans and tugged them nearly off in her sleep. Halfway down her knees, she looked like she was mid-moon. Or mid-bathroom break. A slash of skin and dark curly hair had her groaning again. The hole in her underwear had clearly gotten larger. Shit. She looked over at Ben and gasped.

There, wrapping itself around his upstretched arms and neck, slithered some type of brown snake. A very, very large snake. Was it a rattlesnake? No, thought Lex. Lex’s mouth couldn’t feel any drier as she tried to scream out and only what equated to a baby bird’s worth of sound came out. Shit. Shit!

Forcing herself to cough, Lex stood and started to make her way to Ben. With one step, her leg pulled on the other and as she fell down onto the blackened driftwood, Lex was finally able to scream out.

“Ben!”

“Where are we going?” I ask, breathless as I try to keep up with his long, purposeful
strides.

“Home,” he snaps, his voice leaving no room for debate.

“But we just got here!” I protest, stumbling slightly in my heels.

“We did what we came to do. Now we’re leaving,” he growls, his voice low and dangerous, a clear warning to tread carefully. “Get in the car.”

“Not until you tell me what the hell is wrong with you. I did everything you asked!”

“Oh, I know you did,” he says, his voice rising, the cracks in his composure showing. “Trust me, I’m so fucking aware you did everything I asked.”

“Then what’s your problem?” I snap back, matching his intensity head-on. “What else do you want?”

In one swift move, he pulls me flush against him, his forehead pressing against mine as his voice drops to a deadly whisper. His dark eyes burn into mine as he rasps, “I want you not to go within a mile of that bastard ever again. I want to break every finger on his disgusting hands—over and over—until he learns to keep them off you. I want you to never smile at anyone but me the way you smiled at him tonight. But what I really want”—his voice dips, laced with madness—“is to bend you over and fuck you into submission until you accept you belong to me.”

My heart hammers against my ribs, my breath coming in erratic pants, but I refuse to look away. I tilt my chin up defiantly, meeting his gaze head-on as I correct him. “No. What you really want is me.”

His deep brown eyes darken further, his lips parting as if to argue. Every inch of him coiled with tension and challenge. But then, as if something snaps inside him, his expression shifts, and he exhales a shaky breath.

“God help me,” he murmurs, his voice raw, “I do.”

His admission lands like a blow, knocking the wind out of both of us. But I don’t falter.

Holding his gaze, I say, “Then fucking have me.”

Before I can fully process what’s happening, he yanks the limousine door open, his hand tightening possessively on my arm as he drags me inside.

Q: Hi, Anna. Can you tell us more about yourself?

AC: I’m a first-generation Brazilian immigrant, and I’ve been living in the US since 2018. Also, I have an unhealthy obsession with old CW shows. They’re my ultimate guilty pleasure—Dean Winchester, Damon Salvatore, and Klaus Mikaelson, I’m looking at you.

Q: What is your book about?

AC: It’s about a mafia boss and the thief who dared to steal from him. Bound by Revenge is the story of what happens when the most dangerous man in the world takes one look at a girl and decides she’s his. Nik is instantly obsessed with Kat, but she’s too busy trying to survive a very dangerous situation to even think about love.

When Nik discovers her betrayal, he makes her an offer she can’t refuse, and suddenly, they’re stuck together. As they clash, Kat starts to wonder if Nik is as ruthless as he pretends to be. Maybe he has a weakness, after all—her. And maybe, while she’s been trying to outsmart him, he’s been falling for her all along.

At its heart, it’s about love and impossible choices. What would you sacrifice for the person who means everything?

Q: If your book was made into a movie, who would star in it?

AC: Ana de Armas as Kat—she’s stunning and nails that mix of strength and vulnerability. For Nik, I’d say Ben Barnes or Henry Cavill, but only if they can pull off a Russian accent.

Q: Describe your main character in three words.

AC: Kat is fun, feisty, fearless. Nik is intense, protective, so-done-with-everyone’s-crap (that counts as one word, right?).

Q: Do you listen to music while writing? Share your Spotify list with us!

AC: Absolutely! My playlist is a mix of Hozier, The Weeknd, and Rihanna. And when lyrics get too distracting, I switch to instrumental pop covers, Bridgerton soundtrack-style—it’s perfect for setting the mood without pulling me out of the scene.

Q: What is your favorite part of being a published author?

AC: Hearing from readers who connect with my characters—it’s honestly the best feeling in the world.
