By H.L. Nida
Learning to trust a man again, yeah sure, that sounds easy. It’s hard when you’re a struggling single mom with a beautiful daughter, that you feel you have to protect. My past is full of hurts and an ex-fiancé who was unpredictable and abusive. At times, I’m surprised I’m still alive. As much as I’d love to have a man in my life, he’s going to have to prove that he’s worth it this time.
Five years of being alone would make any woman wonder what happened to the sexy side of her. My best friend thinks I’m ready to move forward but, I’m not sure yet.
After meeting a law enforcement officer that captures my eye, doesn’t mean that he will change my mind, or my heart. Even if he is a freaking magician between the sheets. I’m not interested in getting into a relationship; I can manage fine on my own. The only way I’d be interested in a man, is if he’s capable of not only being the right man for me but, he would have to prove that he’s the man that my daughter deserves as well.

Excerpt from Arrested Heart:
I look up holding back my tears as the officer slowly makes his way to my window. Shit! I’m so stupid, I should have been paying attention instead of singing along to Alli Jae and obviously speeding. I’m awoken from my thoughts by that deep sexy voice, “License and registration, ma’am.”
Shit, no fucking way, it’s HIM! I don’t even look up as I’m still holding back tears and say, “My license is in my purse on the passenger seat, and my registration is in my glove box.”
“You may get them, thank you,” he states all matter of fact and sexily.
As I reach for the items he’s requested, he asks me, “Do you know why I pulled you over today, ma’am?”
“Oh, I’m sure I was speeding. I have to tell you I am not someone who normally speeds and I am so sorry, Officer, I have a good…” and as I look up with the requested items in my hand, mid-sentence, I see the most dazzling smile I’ve ever seen. This gorgeous man is staring down at me with his legs spread, all of his arm muscles and tattoos on display and his amber eyes seem as though he’s smiling through them as well. I’m pretty sure I see a dimple on his left cheek, which makes my heart melt, and sends a wave of lust to my core. I’m speechless. I’m supposed to be begging my way out of a ticket and I’m frozen mid-sentence, and I’m pretty sure I’m drooling.
“Hello, Lulu,” he says as he takes my license and registration from my hand. I forgot that I was even holding them. He leans in a little further so I can hear him better as traffic is speeding by at breakneck speed, and says, “So tell me what you were going to use as an excuse to be driving so fast I could write you up for reckless driving?” in that smoky sexy voice.
“Oh, um…I was, well you see…” I am stuttering and dumbfounded and I feel like a complete idiot. I take a deep breath and break eye contact to stare at my steering wheel. I exhale and say, “I have to be somewhere to get some paperwork completed for a new job I’m starting and if I don’t get there fast, and do what I need to do, I’ll be late to pick up my daughter from preschool.”
After a long pause, he says, “Well, we wouldn’t want that now, would we?” He’s still smiling at me like the Cheshire cat. “Let’s say I let you go, but you’ve got to promise me something here, Lulu. I want to make sure that you drive safe to go get your paperwork done, and for the love of God, do not drive like that with Sveva in the car!” He hands me back my license and registration with that same smoldering smile, and waves to me to proceed as he steps away from my car and back to his.
Oh, my God, I can’t believe my luck. No way did I just get pulled over by him and he let me go, so I could pick up my kid on time. I can’t believe it, I’m in shock. I have never been let off of a ticket before, but then again, I’ve only had one in my entire life, and that was when I was a teenager.
I’m still shaken from being pulled over, as I pull back into traffic. I’m sure it’s just adrenaline running through my veins, but I’m smiling. I can’t believe he didn’t give me a ticket and wait…did he say Sveva?! Oh. My. God. He remembered my daughter’s name from Pam’s Cafe. WAIT! He remembered my name, too. I think I need a new pair of panties. These are going to need to be thrown away, as they are certainly ruined.

Interview with H.L. Nida:
Q: Hi H.L. Nida, thanks for joining us! Tell me, did you always want to be an author?
HLN: Actually, no. I never thought when I was younger that I’d ever write a book, much less a series. A few years ago, a story kept popping into my head. I tried to ignore it, but it wouldn’t go away. So, when my husband and I were on a long road trip, I started typing it into Notes on my phone. Within a few months, Arrested Heart was written.
Q: Why romance? What drew you to the genre?
HLN: Most of what I read is romance. I love romance novels, especially ones that are written in a way that I relate to the characters.
Q: For those who are new to your books, what is the series about?
HLN: The entire Arrested Series revolves around law enforcement officers. Sometimes they’re men, sometimes they’re women. It has a double theme to it though, as it also deals with the many different types of domestic violence. My women are not always damsels in distress, and my men aren’t always the hero’s. Its written in a way that makes you believe these are people you know, people who you’ve met and you’re now getting a closer look into who they really are. Sometimes you’re rooting for the characters, and sometimes, well… you might want to smack some sense back into them.
Q: Tell us about your heroine.
HLN: In Arrested Heart, the heroine is Lulu. She’s a single mom with a past she still hasn’t been able to be honest with herself about. She’s most worried about providing for her daughter and making a good life for her. She is sweet and at times she comes across shy, but she makes up for that by having the most gregarious best friend.
Q: Tell us about your hero.
HLN: In Arrested Heart, the hero is Liam. He’s a mountain of a man, who comes across to those who don’t know him as intimidating and rigid, yet almost all women find him extremely handsome. He has plans for his life that just haven’t come together in his determined time frame, nor with the people he expected. He has a huge family that keeps him grounded. He enjoys his job, but being social is not always easy for him. He sees things as black and white and hasn’t really learned how to enjoy the gray areas of life yet.
Q: What is your ideal reading experience?
HLN: My ideal reading experience is when I open a book and get so engrossed in it, I don’t even want to go to the bathroom. I want to know what happens next, and I am known for reading an entire book in one day, if it can grab my attention and keep it. I love it when that happens. I’ve pre-ordered books and when they’ve come in, I take the day to devour it. That’s when you know it was a good one!
Q: Do you have any pets?
HLN: Yes, I have three brindle rescue puppies that are 13, 10 and 7 years old. When I walk them in the neighborhood, I call them the senior parade. LOL. They’re very sweet old pups that really just want two meals a day, a walk, and some love. I lost both of my cats in the last year, and I’m on the hunt for a new one, but I’m being picky. The cat can’t come into the house and beat up the dogs (yes, this has happened!).
Q: What is your favorite part of being a published author?
HLN: When someone loves my book(s)! There’s nothing better than a review that raves about it, or when a friend reads it and texts me throughout all of her comments!
Q: Where can readers find you?
HLN: Since I am obviously pro-law enforcement, I had to remove myself from Twitter and Facebook, as they keep censoring me and my conservative views about how Law enforcement is needed. So, right now, you can find me on Parler @HLNida or on my website www.HLNidaAuthor.com. I am on Goodreads as well, but I’m not very active there.
